Sunset from Pinhaw

Pinhaw Sunset

Brilliant sunset tonight, truly enjoyed it while driving home and had to stop to snap this.

But it was utterly destroyed by fly tipping. We live in one of the most beautiful/stunning/wonderful areas in the UK, heck the world, right on the door step of the brilliant Yorkshire Dales. I know that this parking lot is a known dogging spot. Hey, why not it is a great view to be doing a bit of “alfresco”, each to their own 🙂 Yet some right old numpty, I guess needed a bit of comfort, but couldn’t asked to – pack it in, pack it out!

bed with a view

I know the various councils run a tip/recycling centre where you can pretty much bring anything. Some councils will even come a take away you old banger, free of charge. So there is no excuse to do fly tipping.

I just can’t get my head around peoples minds, when they are OK with dumping their shit/garbage wherever they want. How can they live in and accept that the area/world they are living is, for the lack of a better word, a skip/landfill.

Come on people – clean up after yourself, it is not that hard!

Side note : Walk in “Skip”ton …

Cycle Cross in PDX

Cycle Cross in PDX

While in Portland we had the chance to go and see Cycle Cross race or two. It looked mad, crazy and like utter mayhem.

Everything that you can add to a bike ride to make it as hard as possible jumps, steep as f**k hills, grass, tight corners and steps etc. And this was all done for the “fun” of it, I have heard that it is more enjoyable when it is dark, raining, muddy and bloddy freezing. If you don’t come home with something broken on you or your bike and covered in an inch of mud, cuts and blood – it has not been a good day.

So when can we have a go?

Vaux's Swifts in Portland

Vaux’s Swifts in Portland

If should ever find yourself in Portland, Oregon in September time you just have to go and have picnic and watch the Vaux’s Swifts at Chapman School and enjoy the show – Tens of thousands of tiny birds swarm into one school chimney every fall.

It starts slowly but build up to a fantastic show, you might even get a visit from a Hawk and that gets the crowd going – who are you supporting – very dramatic.

Just a word of warning : Tens of thousands of birds above you doing what birds do naturally – flying and well I’m sure you can guess the other thing – so bring some tissues and cover your picnic 🙂

Tasmanian Bush fires 2013

Tasmanian Bush fires 2013

We arrived into Tasmania amidst of one of the worst bush fires in living memory. You hear and read about it but you really don’t know how bad it is until you see it. The total randomness of the fire – one house, tree or car gone to the ground and right next to it there is a house, tree or car totally unscathed bar a bit of ash.

Our hearts and thoughts goes out to the families who suffered, please donate to the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery fond who are working hard to help.

Wild dogs

Wild dogs

We saw our fair share of “wild dogs” and even heard them fighting in the night. They were roaming the street living on what they found. Puppies left to fend for them self at the side of the roads. Drivers didn’t even try to avoid hitting them when ran out onto the streets, saw plenty of evidence of dog and vehicular “interference”. People threw things at them, kicked them away and hit them with brooms or whatever they had at hand.

Not something we were used to see.

Going underground

Going underground

If you know me or have meet me ever, even for a short while. I’m sure that you have heard my rant about the Tube aka the underground public transport in London. I had to endure it the other day, lucky I only have to use this horrid thing once every three to four months. How can people do this every day, TWICE or even more ….. oh here I go starting my rant, I’ll get off my soap box.

Autumn vs. Fall

Autumn vs. Fall

This is a bit like the old tomato, aluminium and nike etc. thing. I say fall because the leafs are falling or is it because my English teacher picked the US version or because I have watched too many US sitcoms. But if it is the latter, why the heck do I say all the other words in the Queen English?

Anywhoo, what ever you call it, I’m about to bore you a bit with some photos of the season.

Street party

Street party

Even though I was working yesterday it was good to see the street parties, when I went to and from work. I think I saw at least eight street parties. Best of all the roads were empty and the parks too, so it really felt like I was alone out there.

So we just need to get Charles to take over from Liz and then Jr to take over from Charles and the happy royal couple breeding fast. We will then have a few parties in fast succession, three coronations, a few baptising (they tend to breed these royals) and then some weddings when the little rascals have grown up.

Oh it will also get something else on the coins, notes and stamps it is getting a bit boring to see Liz every time 😉

quack

Quack !

This photo was taken in New Zealand not many miles from Dunedin. On every campsite we visited there was a sign saying, do not feed the ducks. And on every campsite we had a least one couple waddling around. The Ma Quack walking in front taking the lead, with Pa Quack around two feet behind. Ma Quack was rather bossy, this one even tried to nick Peli’s ice cream. Where Pa Quack was more shy and hanged back all the time. You could clearly see who was wearing the trousers in the family Quack.

The reason for why I post this photo, is that we have a couple of Quacks here where we live. I spotted them last year waddling around on the playground. This year they are back waddling around on the garage roof and green areas. I wonder why they have pick our neck of the woods and not one of the parks or even the river near by.

The thing that stands out with this couple, is that there is no “boss” in this relationship like the ones in NZ.

Urban decay

Urban decay

It is sad to see your neighbourhood falling apart, Urban decay, or an area just left to its own devices with people treating it with no respect. When you live in a big city like London, Paris or the like you often have areas that “time” has forgotten.

Though sometimes these areas do have a little bit of brightness. OK, it’s a bit hard to see what the silver lining in this picture is. But it is taken not far from the entrance to the catacombs in Paris, not the ones where you will get a guided tour.

Concrete jungle

Concrete jungle

What ever you say about the concrete jungle and cityscapes, there is beauty there. Just simple lines, symmetry, colour and the sheer scale of them. Makes concrete beautiful.

This was taken while walking around in Paris may years ago, honestly I can’t remember where. Though looking back at my old pictures I need to get out there to take some more photo of architecture and buildings.
